A varied well-balanced diet including sufficient vegetable food products (see above) can perfectly provide the necessary amount of magnesium for a proper functioning of the above-mentioned physiological functions. However, some individuals often show a magnesium deficiency, whether or not in the context of recreational or competitive sports, due to a lack of a well-balanced diet. Magnesium deficiency is particularly common in sportsmen who follow a consistent or periodic low-calorie diet, for example within the framework of weight category sports or sports where low body weight is considered to improve performances (e.g. dancing, gymnastics, long-distance running, cycling, ...). This may result in a negative magnesium balance. Magnesium deficiency among sportsmen is generally associated with an increased susceptibility to cramps and an increased risk of injuries. In that case, we recommend supplementation with magnesium in the form of SC Magnesium, whether or not as a preventive measure. Moreover, in the event of a prolonged stay in a warm environment where magnesium loss through sweating is insufficiently compensated by food or drinks, intake of SC Magnesium is also recommended.

Instructions for use:
One tablet of SC Magnesium contains 450 milligrams of elemental magnesium. The usual dose for adults is 1 tablet per day and for children over 13 years ½ tablet per day. SC Magnesium should be preferably taken during meals with sufficient water. Because of the negative impact of magnesium on resorption of antibiotics in the form of tetracycline, SC Magnesium should be taken at least 2 hours before or after tetracycline ingestion.

Biochemical properties:
SC Magnesium is a high-dose magnesium supplement. Magnesium is a mineral like calcium, iron, sodium and potassium. SC Magnesium contains 450mg of elemental magnesium of which 96% in the form of magnesium oxide and 4% in the form of magnesium chelate. The human body cannot produce magnesium itself and needs to absorb magnesium from food. Magnesium is an essential ingredient of chlorophyll and is found in high concentrations in vegetable food, such as leaf vegetables, dried legumes, (wholemeal) cereal products, nuts, but also bananas. It is perfectly possible to maintain the body’s magnesium balance without the need for supplements through a well-balanced diet containing sufficient of these food products.

Physiological functions:
Magnesium is involved in the regulation of muscle and nerve sensitivity to stimulation, and is vital for energy production in the muscles, including breakdown of ATP which directly provides energy for muscle contractions. Magnesium also plays an essential role in the formation of bones and teeth and is indispensable for the functioning of vitamins B1 and B6, which fulfil important functions in energy metabolism. Magnesium deficiency can lead to general weakness and fatigue, muscle cramps and loss of concentration.
